General Information

Shrubs or small trees, latex white. Stems repeatedly dichotomously branched. Leaves opposite; adaxial surface of petiole often with a basal semicircular or semiamplexicaul ocrea. Cymes corymbose or umbellate, at branch forks, many or rarely 1-flowered. Calyx divided halfway down or deeper, with few to many basal glands inside. Corolla salverform, widened at or near middle, lobes sharply overlapping to left [or right]. Stamens inserted in widened part of corolla tube; filaments short or almost none; anthers oblong or narrowly triangular, free from pistil head, base sagittate or deeply cordate and not spurred; disc absent. Ovaries 2, free; ovules numerous. Style filiform; pistil head with a subglobose or lampshade-shaped basal part and stigmoid, 2-cleft apical part. Follicles 2, divaricate. Seeds with a red or orange fleshy aril; coma absent.

    Árboles o arbustos; tallos con secreción lechosa, glabros o pubescentes; coléteres interpeciolares inconspicuos. Hojas opuestas, eglandulares. Inflorescencias en cimas o panículas, axilares o terminales, con pocas a muchas flores; brácteas pequeñas, usualmente diminutas. Flores con un cáliz de 5 sépalos, iguales a subiguales, diminutos o foliáceos, con varios coléteres en la base de la cara adaxial; corola hipocraterimorfa, sin estructuras coronales accesorias, el tubo usualmente recto, rara vez con una torsión en la posición de los estambres, el limbo actinomorfo, la estivación dextrorsa; estambres incluidos o apicalmente exertos, las anteras no conniventes, no aglutinadas a la cabeza estigmática; gineceo 2-carpelar, los óvulos numerosos; cabeza estigmática fusiforme; nectarios usualmente ausentes o casi inconspicuas cuando presentes. Frutos en folículos apocárpicos, la superficie lisa, tuberculada o echinada; semillas numerosas, desnudas, rodeadas por un arilo carnoso. Aprox. 100 spp. Pantropical; 44-45 spp. los neotrópicos.

    Arbustos o árboles con látex blanco y ramas bifurcadas. Hojas opuestas, eglandulares. Inflorescencia cimoso-paniculada, con flores blancas; sépalos pequeños más o menos iguales; corola hipocrateriforme; anteras no aglutinadas a la cabeza del estilo; ovario apocárpico. Fruto de 2 folículos cortos, carnosos, dehiscentes y exhibiendo las numerosas semillas con conspicuo arilo anaranjado.

    Un género pantropical con más ca 100 especies; 5 especies se encuentran en Nicaragua.

    Shrubs, or small trees, lacticiferous. Leaves opposite, non-glandular, pin- nately-nerved; petioles weakly perfoliate, ? glandular in the axils. Inflorescences cymose, compound, many-flowered, mostly axillary. Flowers small to medium- sized; calyx 5-lobed, the lobes equal, relatively small, bearing many squamellae; -corolla salverform, without appendages, the tube straight, the limb 5-lobed, sin- istrorsely convolute; stamens 5, included or ? exserted, attached midway or higher on the corolla tube, the anthers free and not agglutinated to the stigma, without an enlarged connective; gynoecium 2-carpellate, apocarpous, the ovary superior, the ovules numerous, the nectary shallow or absent, the style 1, the stigma umbraculiform below and capitate or pentagonal above. Fruit apocarpous, of 2 follicles, ? large and heavy; seeds many, naked, embedded in a fleshy aril.
