Cochlospermum vitifolium (Willd.) Spreng., Syst. Veg. 4(2): 406. 1827; Bombax vitifolium Willd.

Arboles o arbustos, 3–15 m de alto. Hojas con 5–7 lobos elípticos a oblongos, acuminadas, subenteras a serradas, glabras o pubescentes en el envés. Panícula terminal amplia, flores actinomorfas, 8–12 cm de ancho; pétalos ampliamente obovados, emarginados, amarillos; ovario 1-locular, con 5 placentas parietales. Cápsula suberecta a colgante, ampliamente ovada a obovada umbilicada, valva exterior de color café obscuro, gris o verdoso, afelpada o glabra, valva interna de color ocre a crema, glabra; semillas reniformes con tricomas blancos gosipinos.

Común en bosques deciduos, matorrales o malezas, mayormente en vegetación secundaria o a orillas de caminos, en todo el país; 0–850 m; fl dic–mar, fr feb–jun; Araquistain 492, Stevens 5790; norte de México a Ecuador y noreste de Brasil, Bolivia, las Antillas. Un género pantropical con 12 especies, 4 de ellas neotropicales. "Poro poro", "Tecumajoche".

    Suffrutices, shrubs or small trees, deciduous, sometimes with tuberous roots. Leaves petiolate, palmatilobed or compound-digitate, glabrous or not. Inflorescences terminal and axillary, racemose or paniculate. Flowers 5-merous, the sepals un- equal; petals convolute, large, membranous, mostly yellow; filaments slender, equal or not, the anthers basifixed, oblong or linear, apically poricidal; ovary 1-lo- cular except at the base, with 3-5 parietal placentae; style slender, the stigma scarcely thickened, usually inconspicously denticulate. Capsules 1-locular, the exocarp glabrous or not, the endocarp membranous; seeds reniform, long-lanate, the testa thin and easily detachable.
