Fruits ellipsoid, 3–6 cm. long, prominently 6–8-ribbed.
Leaves simple; petiole usually 5–9 mm. long, rarely less than 5 mm. or up to 14 mm., glabrous, wrinkled or minutely punctiform; blade variable in size and shape, suborbicular, elliptic, ovate or obovate, 3–9.3 cm. long, 1.8–7.2 cm. wide, with the margin sometimes slightly revolute, coriaceous or slightly fleshy, somewhat scabrous.
Shrub, sometimes scandent, or a small tree, 1–4 m. tall, with large tuberous roots.
Inflorescence a 1–10-flowered loose corymbose raceme; pedicels bracteate, articulated at the base, up to 2 cm. long.
Young twigs terete, glabrous or shortly hispid.
Buds up to 11 mm. in diameter prior to rupture, glabrous or minutely punctiform.
