Musci Scand. 32. 1879. Hypnum serpens var. varium (Hedw.) Müll. Hal., Syn. Musc. Frond. 2: 412. 1851. Leskea varia Hedw., Sp. Musc. Frond. 216. 1801. Type: U.S.A.   Plants small, yellowish or brownish green, in loosely caespitose mats. Stems prostrate, 2–5 cm long, irregularly branched; pseudoparaphyllia small, foliose; central strand weakly differentiated. Stem leaves erect, elongate-ovate or ovate-lanceolate, 1.6–1.2 mm × ca. 0.5 mm, gradually acuminate, slightly decurrent at base; costae reaching leaf apex, usually curved in upper part; margins serrulate; median leaf cells rhomboidal, thick-walled, 20–35 mm × 7–9 mm; alar cells slightly differentiated, small, quadrate. Autoicous. Inner perichaetial leaves erect, lanceolate, plicate; costae single, strong. Setae slender, elongate, curved when dry; capsules cylindrical, arching curved; endostome segments carinate; cilia 1–2, longer than the segments, nodulose. Spores 9–12 mm in diameter, spherical, finely papillose.
