Plantas 2-4 m, robustas, leñosas, erectas, glabras, sólo la inflorescencia escabriúscula o tomentulosa. Hojas 30-40 cm, triangular-ovadas, ternado-pinnadas compuestas, los folíolos 2-6 × 1-3 cm, lanceolados a ovado-lanceolados, acuminados, gruesamente espinuloso-serrados y laciniadamente lobados, el envés pálido y fuertemente nervado; anillos nodales elevados, glabros, membranáceos; pecíolos 5-30 cm, las hojas caulinares con vainas visiblemente infladas. Radios 15-25, 3-6.5 cm, escabriúsculos, unidos en la base; involucelo de 8-12 bractéolas 5-10 mm, linear-lanceoladas a espatuladas, acuminadas, enteras o pinnatífidas, escarioso-marginadas, con nervaduras verdes, sobrepasando a las flores; pedicelos 7-9 mm, escabriúsculos; patente-ascendentes, unidos en la base. Estilos 2.5-3 mm. Frutos 15-20 × c. 2 mm, linear-oblongos; mericarpos subteretes. Laderas boscosas y volcánicas expuestas. P ( Woodson y Schery 410, K). 2800-3500 m. (Endémica.)

    Small, glabrous and glaucous tree ( "woody herb") 2-4 m. tall from a stout taproot; leaves ovate-deltoid, the blade 3-4 dm. long, the leaflets lanceolate, 2-6 cm. long, spinulose-serrate and laciniately lobed, paler beneath, the petiolules with a membranaceous stipular ring, the petiole with a conspicuous, inflated sheath; cauline leaves reduced upward, sometimes bladeless; peduncles 3-8 cm. long, glandular-puberulent above; involucre of 1-3 linear bracts to 2.5 cm. long, the involucel of several entire to cleft bractlets 5-10 mm. long and exceeding the flowers; fruiting rays unequal, 3-6 cm. long, glandular-puberulent on the angles, the pedicels 7-9 mm. long, glandular-puberulent; fruit linear, 15-20 mm. long.
