General Information

Shrubs erect, to 2 m tall, with clear sap. Leaves in whorls of 3-5, subsessile; leaf blade elliptic or narrowly obovate, 5-14 X 2-4 cm, minutely hispid along veins; lateral veins elevated on abaxial surface. Flowers 4-6 cm. Corolla tube rather narrowly funnelform, ca. 3 cm, distinctly swollen at base, limb ca. 4 cm in diam.; lobes pale yellow, ovate or orbicular, ca. 2 cm, obtuse. Capsules globose, ca. 3 cm in diam., long spiny. Seeds ca. 2 X 1.5 cm. Fl. May-Aug, fr. Oct-Dec. 2n = 18.

    Allamanda brasiliensis Schott ex Pohl, A. cathartica Schrad. non L., A. neriifolia Hook.

    Arbustos grandes. Hojas 5-13.5 × 1.5-4 cm, elípticas a obovadas, membranáceas, el envés piloso a lo largo de la vena media, el haz glabro. Flores amarillas a anaranjadas, algunas veces con bandas rojas por dentro; cáliz peloso adaxialmente, con 2-8 coléteres abaxialmente la base; corola con la parte inferior del tubo 1-1-5 × 0.4-0.6 cm, la parte superior expandida 2.5-4 × 1.2-1.5 cm, ventricosa, los lobos 1.5-2.5 × 1-1.5 cm, ovados; disco nectarífero marcadamente 5-lobado. Frutos 2.5-4 × 2-3 cm, globosos, las espinas 10-15 mm; semillas gruesas, escasamente aladas. 2 n =18. Orillas de ríos , orillas y claros de bosques; con preferencia por áreas húmedas. Ch ( Ventura y López 254, MO); H ( Standley 3864, F); CR ( Morales 5440, INB); P ( Shattuck 87, MO). 0-1500 m. (Nativa del SE. de Brasil; ampliamente cultivada en los neotrópicos.)

    Morphology

    Leaves like those of Nerium; flowers small, yellow. Allamanda have very spiny subglobose fruits.
