Leaf-blades ovate-oblong, broadly ovate or obovate, sometimes obovate-elliptic, apex subacute or obtuse, rarely rounded, base generally cordate, rarely subtruncate-cordate or -rounded, membranous to chartaceous, hairy above, tomentose beneath at least when young, glabrescent with age, serrate to sinuate-dentate, 5–11(–17) cm. long, 3–5(–10) cm. broad; lateral nerves 6–9 pairs (2 basal), slightly prominent above, markedly so beneath, venation reticulate and raised beneath; petiole tomentose, (1–)2–4(–7) cm. long; stipules linear-lanceolate, tomentose, 6–10 mm. long, 2–5 mm. broad at base.
Seeds several, compressed, ± 4 mm. across; testa pubescent; aril dark brown when dry.
Capsule globose, covered with many puberulous branching bristles or spines, up to 4 .5 cm. across including the bristles (1.5–2 cm.), dehiscent into 3 valves.
Ovary ellipsoid-globose, set with soft setose processes; style slender, ± 5 mm. long.
Stamens very numerous; filaments puberulous, 3–5 mm.; anthers linear, puberulous, ± 5 mm.
Petals 8–(12), obovate-oblong, obtuse, white, edge somewhat undulate, dorsally tomentose, 1.5–2 cm. long, 0.5–0.7 cm. broad.

Leaf-lamina 5–17 x 3.5–10 cm., ovate-oblong, broadly ovate or obovate, apex acute or obtuse, base cordate, margins serrate, pilose above and tomentose below, at least when young; lateral nerves in 6–9 pairs with 5–7 basal nerves, slightly prominent above, very prominent below, venation reticulate and prominent below; petioles up to 7 cm. long, golden-tomentose; stipules c. 1 cm. long, lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, acuminate at the apex, yellowish-tomentose.
