Morphology

Climbing geophyte, up to 2 m high. Leaves cauline, verticillate below, alternate above; blade linear to ovate, ± 130 mm long, apex a recurved tendril or with an arista. Flowers: solitary; perianth with segments free, connate at base, apices pointed, recurved, golden-yellow; Nov.-Mar.

      A scandent plant with a small tuber. Stems simple, glabrous. Leaves about 13 cm long, 0.8 to 1.2 cm. broad, lanceolate, long attenuated into a tendril, glabrous. Flowers solitary in the axils of the leaves. Pedicels up to 1 x 5 cm long, terete, glabrous. Perianth campanulate, 2-2 cm long, glabrous; tube very short; lobes lanceolate, acuminate, acute, with a prominent mid-rib. Stamens inserted at the base of the perianth-tube; filaments 3 mm long, flattened, linear; anthers 5 mm long, oblong. Ovary 6 mm long, ellipsoid, glabrous; style 3 mm long, terete; lobes 1-5 mm long, linear.

        Distribution

        Extends from East London to Natal and Swaziland and into the northern Transvaal, and has also been recorded from the eastern parts of the Orange Free State.
