Morphology

Clusters up to 80 mm diam. Leaf-pairs succulent, up to 20 mm long, 12 mm diam., cylindrical, apex convex and usually bilobate, variably windowed. Epidermis purplish brown to greyish brown often with a mottled pattern of opaque brownish `islands' or smudges, sometimes with wart-like groups of prominent cells, often with a central depressed patch or an even, chequered pattern. Flowers diurnal, long-tubed, petals white, pink, rarely magenta, filaments forming a yellow to cinnabar ring, stigmas hidden.

    Crevices of gneiss slabs, on gneiss/quartzite cliffs, slopes, or in rubble.
