Morphology

Dioecious tree up to 12 m tall; bark grey and not peeling; young branchlets shallowly fluted, obtuse, glabrous. Leaves pinnate, 3-5-jugate, glabrous, green; petiole 30-90 mm long; leaflets narrowly elliptic to elliptic; petiolules 2-5 mm long; margins crenate-serrate to coarsely crenate-serrate, apex acute, base cuneate to rounded, terminal leaflet up to 120 x 50 mm, lateral leaflets up to 130 x 50 mm. Inflorescence: axillary, paniculate, simple or dichasial cymes. Flowers unisexual, perigynous. Pedicel less than 1 mm long, pedicel and calyx glabrous. Disc 4-lobed, adnate to hypanthium. Stamens 8. Fruit subglobose, ±20 x 19 x 18 mm, glabrous; putamen smooth; pseudo-aril red, cupular with 1 very short facial lobe, covering lower third of putamen.

    Habitat

    It usually grows on the slopes of mountains or in kloofs as part of coastal forests.

    Distribution

    Occurs near the coast from Zululand southwards to East London. Also recorded from Mozambique.
