    Annual herb, up to 300 mm tall. Rhachilla of spikelet 0.50-0.75 mm broad. Spikelets dark or becoming so at maturity. Glumes red, brown or black, sometimes with pale tips.

    Slender, annual herb, up to 300 mm high. Flowers: inflorescence terminal, a head of 1-4 spikes; bisexual floret accompanied by both glume and prophyll within the subtending bract; dark red bracts with an acuminate, recurved apex 0.4-0.8(-1.3) mm long, apex yellowish to greenish; spikelets dark or becoming so at maturity; Jan.-May.
