General Information

Costus scaber Ruiz & Pav., Fl. Peruv. 1: 2. 1798.

Hierbas 0.5–3 m de alto. Hojas angostamente elípticas, 10–30 cm de largo y 3–10 cm de ancho, ápice acuminado, base cuneada a redondeada, haz glabra a escasamente pubérula, costa densa y menudamente hirsuta, envés glabro a densa y menudamente pubérulo; lígula 2–12 mm de largo. Inflorescencia ovoide a cilíndrica, 4–10 (–20) cm de largo y 1.5–3.5 (–4.5) cm de ancho; brácteas ampliamente ovadas, 2–3.5 cm de largo, obtusas, glabras a densamente pubérulas, rojas a amarillo-anaranjadas; bractéolas 9–12 mm de largo; cáliz 3–7 mm de largo; corola 35–40 mm de largo, glabra, anaranjada a amarilla; labelo tubular, 20–30 mm de largo, amarillo. Cápsula elipsoide a subglobosa, 7–12 mm de largo.

Común en bosques siempreverdes y vegetación secundaria, zona norcentral; 10–1400 m; fl y fr durante todo el año; Stevens 15133, 21118; México a Sudamérica tropical y las Antillas.

    Plantas hasta ca. 3 m. Hojas con lámina 10–32 × 3–11 cm, ambos lados generalmente glabros, el haz con el nervio medial estriguloso; vaina glabra a puberulenta; lígula 0.2–1.2 cm, truncada. Infl. 4–10 × 1.5–3.5 cm(hasta ca. 22 × 4.5 cm en fr.), ovoide a estrechamente cilíndrica; brácteas anaranjado rojizo a rojas, sin apéndice. Fls. con cáliz 0.3–0.7 cm; corola glabra; labelo 2–3 × 1.5–2 cm, tubular, anaranjado amarillento.

    Rather stout plants 1-2 m. tall, the stem somewhat spiral, usually dispropor- tionally thick; leaves oblong-oblanceolate, rather abruptly acuminate, broadly cuneate toward the base, very shortly petiolate, 15-30 cm. long, 5-8 cm. broad, generally puberulent beneath, particularly the midrib, essentially glabrous above; inflorescence broadly ovoid, set amongst the reduced upper leaves, 3-8 cm. long; bracts ovate, rather narrowly acute, 2.5-4.0 cm. long, orange to scarlet, without a callus, essentially glabrous; calyx about 1 cm. long, broadly 3-dentate, red; ovary 0.4 cm. long; corolla about 3 cm. long, the labellum and stamen about equalling, bright yellow.

    Distribution

    Panama to Peru, probably also in Costa Rica, in mountain and foothill thickets and open forest.
