Morphology

Coarsely hispid perennial herb, up to 0.6 m high. Leaves opposite or subopposite, upper leaves smaller, alternate. Heads ± 15 mm long. Involucral bracts in ± 2 or 3 series, subequal. Flowers pink.

    Perennial herb, up to 0.6 m high, coarsely hispid. Leaves alternate, shortly petiolate; blade elliptic, up to 80 x 20 mm, apex subacute, base attenuate, margins serrate. Heads discoid, up to 25 mm in diameter, several in terminal, open, corymbose panicle, pedunculate. Involucral bracts 3-seriate, subequal, purplish. Flowers: disc florets only, pink, Dec.-Mar. Fruit with cypsela narrowly cylindric, 4-angled, black, gland-dotted, ± 4.5 mm long. Pappus of many barbellate bristles.

    Herbaceous perennial, stems erect to c. 60 cm from a rhizomatous stock, simple below, branching above into the compound inflorescence, coarsely hispid, leafy. Leaves up to 8 x 2 cm, becoming much smaller and more distant upwards, lanceolate-elliptic, apex subacute, narrowed to a petiole-like base, margins serrate, both surfaces hispid. Heads broadly campanulate, c. 1.5 x 2.5 cm, several in an open corymbose panicle. Involucral bracts in 3 series, subequal, equalling the flowers, purplish, hairy. Flowers pink. Achenes c. 4.5 mm long, narrowly cylindric, 4-angled, angles sparsely scabrid, faces black, gland-dotted. Pappus of numerous scabrid bristles, tips pink.
