|Description||The main goal of the Caryophyllales initiative is to integrate the knowledge of this order (e.g. taxonomic treatments, phylogenies and biogeographical information) into a global synthesis, in a continuous feedback system, accessible through an Internet portal ( http:\\www.caryophyllales.org). The Network is based on a collaborative approach of institutions and a network of individual researchers devoted to Caryophyllales (Borsch & al. 2015, Hernández & al. 2015). Major partners will function as focal points with a long term commitment that ensure sustainability of the initiative. At the moment the partnership consists of the Instituto de Biología UNAM (México) and the Instituto Darwinion (Argentina) in addition to the Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum Berlin (BGBM). In order to develop the initiative, BGBM sponsors a full time scientific coordinator’s position and provides the technical support. The information system is based on the EDIT Platform for Cybertaxonomy suite of software tools (Ciardelli & al. 2009, Berendsohn 2010, Müller & al. 2017).
The Nepenthes dataset as used for the WFO backbone was the result of a pilot project for the Network. We were looking for a relatively small family with clear monophyly also at the generic level, and with existing, high-quality electronic open taxonomic data which we could use as a starting point. With many of the taxa in the monogeneric Nepenthaceae occurring in the Malesiana area and thus already present in the EDIT Platform (Cheek & Jebb 2001), that family appeared to be an ideal candidate. The steps taken to assemble the dataset and produce the resulting data paper are described in Berendsohn et al. (2018).
